About the Department
Biomedical engineering is a branch of engineering that applies principles and design concepts of engineering to health care. Biomedical engineers deal with medical devices such as imaging equipment, biocompatible materials such as prostheses or therapeutic biological or processes such as regenerative tissue growth.This department is recognized as a world leader in preparing students for careers in industry and business and for graduate education in engineering, medicine, and science. Biomedical engineering utilizes knowledge from traditional engineering disciplines to solve problems in living systems.
Biomedical Engineering is a broad, interdisciplinary field that applies the science and technology of engineering to problems in biology, medicine, and biotechnology. These problems include the design and analysis of physiologic measuring and diagnostic systems as well as quantitative analysis and experimentation directed toward obtaining a clearer understanding of the human body’s normal and abnormal functions. Biomedical engineering prepares students to become leaders, innovators, and self-educators throughout their biomedical and bioengineering careers. The undergraduate program trains students to apply engineering techniques to the analysis of biological systems, providing full integration of biology and engineering.
